10个关于summer的超实用表达

夏天到了，今天说说与 summer 有关的短语和说法；

每次说到 summer，我都会想起13年前的那部片子 500 Days of Summer，中文名叫《和莎莫的500天》；

一部超现实主义的爱情片，讲述着最简单的道理：在爱情中，无论是被伤害还是被错爱，总能成就不一样的人生经历，正应了那句：

Sometimes when people grow, they grow apart.

有时候，人长大了，就分开了。

1. an Indian summer

An Indian summer 不能直译为"印度的夏天"，它指冬天来临之前短暂的回暖，即我们通常说的"秋老虎"；也引申为漫长悲伤前的短暂幸福；

🌰：September is usually chilly, But this year we are expecting an Indian summer.

九月通常较为寒冷，但今年我们可能会经历一个秋老虎。

2. a cold day in July

July (七月)的天气总是热的，所以，a cold day in July 是不存在的，因此，这个短语是用来表示不太可能发生的事，相当于"除非太阳从西边出来"的说法；

🌰：It'll be a cold day in July before I lend you money again.

让我再借你钱，除非太阳从西边出来。

这个说法还可以换成 a cold day in hell，于中国神话中的地府不同，西方文化中的地狱是热的。

3. full of hot air

这个短语用来形容那些经常说谎，说废话的人；

🌰：You can't believe a word that guy says, he is full of hot air.

你不要相信那个人说的每个字，他总是胡言乱语。

4. the calm before the storm

这个说法可以直译，意思就是"暴风雨前的宁静"，指重大活动或者灾难前的平静；

🌰：Everyone was silent, But it was the calm before the storm.

大家都一言不发，不过，这只是暴风雨前的宁静。

5. under the sun

字面意思"太阳底下"，实际引申为天底下或者全世界；

🌰：This is the largest castle under the sun.

这是世界上最大的城堡。

6. be in hot water

Hot water (热水) 这里比喻麻烦之事，be in hot water 就是陷入麻烦，be in trouble 的意思；

🌰：He is in hot water after he's admitted he has an affair with that girl.

他承认与那女孩有暧昧关系后，现在有麻烦了。

7. dog days of summer

dog days of summer 指七月末到九月间最热的日子；

🌰：The dog days are over and the children are going back to school.

最热的天气结束了，孩子要返校了。

△古希腊人观察到，天狼星(Sirus)，俗称 dog star，是大犬座最亮的星，在七月底会出现在太阳旁边；古希腊人认为大犬座星结合使得七月底开始了一年中最热的时候。

8. soak up the sun

soak 为"浸泡" ，所以这个说法意思就是"日光浴"；

🌰：I want to lie on the beach and soak up some sun. Hopefully I will get a tan.

我想在沙滩上日光浴，那我就有机会晒黑一点了。

9. summer fling

fling 本义为短暂的恋爱，summer fling 就是指打发夏天无聊时光的恋爱；

🌰：Susan had her first summer fling with a boy from summer camp, but thankfully it wasn't too serious.

苏珊和夏令营的一个男孩子谈恋爱了，不过，好在他们没当真。

10. It is not summer until the cricket sings.

这是源自古希腊的一句谚语，字面意思即实际意思：直到蟋蟀鸣叫，夏天才算开始了；

这似乎与另一句谚语 One swallow does not make a summer (看见一只燕子并不代表夏天到来) 有点矛盾哈！
